Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains high in fiber

In the Nurses Health Study, which monitors tens of thousands of women across the United States, the women who ate the most fiber had a 35 percent lower risk of developing gallstones. Foods that offer insoluble fiber—whole-grain bread and most fruits and vegetables, for instance—appear to be particularly helpful. One study showed that people who followed vegetarian diets had a lower risk of gallstones.

Aim for: 25 to 35 grams of fiber daily. Eating 2 cups of fruit, 2 1/2 cups of vegetables, and three servings of whole grains every day will help you hit your goal.
